The Stylers - 11 Non Stop Dancing

During the early 60s, The Shadows were one of the most popular instrumental
groups among Singapore teenagers. Anyone who was capable enough to pick up
a guitar and strum some musical chords would like to emulate themselves as
The Shadows. That was also a boom period for local music with The
Crescendos leading the charge towards stardom, followed by The Quests and
others.
Among the thousands enthusiastic young lads who chased the dream of The
Shadows were four teenagers from the East Coast of Singapore – Rahman,
Frankie Abdullah, Idros and Randy Lee Keng. They teamed up as a band with 3
Guitarists and a Drummer and called themselves The Angels, managed by
Randy’s Uncle. Rahman was on lead guitar, Frankie on bass, Randy on rhythm
and Idros on drums. When Rahman left the group in 1962, John Teo replaced
him on lead guitar and when Idros left, Osman came on as the group’s
drummer. By then the group’s name has changed to The Rhythm Strikers. Most
of their early days' practice sessions were held at Joo Chiat Terrace.
While performing at one of the functions organized by Cathay Organization,
the establishment’s manager, a Caucasian, suggested that the group take on
another name change to The Stylers, since they were performing with a lot
of style, commitment and showmanship on stage.
As the group gained more confidence over time with frequent practices and
party gigs, they decided to participate in the Cliff Richard & The Shadows
Contest organized by Shaw Organization in late 1962. To their own surprise,
the group emerged as Runner-Up with The Shadows' greatest hit - Apache, 2nd
to the eventual winners – The Stompers. Surprised was the feeling because
there were much more established groups during that period. A group called
The Trekkers came in third.
Following this success, the group was offered several contracts and gigs
over the island and even landed up with a 2-year Tea Dance contract at the
popular Celestial Room at Amber Mansions, Orchard Road.
Over the years there were more changes to the group’s line-up. When
Frankie, Osman and Stewart Chew (vocals) left, Ronnie See (vocals), Douglas
Tan (bass) and Alvin Wong (drums) from The Burns joined them. It was during
their stint at the Celestial Room when Robert Song joined the group as
well. Robert was also responsible the The Stylers icon design with two
bunny ears on the “S”. In late 1963 or early 64 they had their first
recording contract sealed with Miracle Records together with a singer by
the name of Maggie. The record was a big success as this was followed by
several more recordings and offers of contracts by different recording
companies in the region, including live performances at the National
Theatre, Musical Express and Early Bird Shows at the Capitol and Odean
cinemas. The Stylers were also high on demand for Getais, a yearly event
and most of the districts in Singapore where they performed would book them
one year in advance. The Stylers has finally arrived!
During the 60s and 70s, The Stylers were one of the most popular local
group, proficient in both Eastern and Western music although they were much
better known among the Mandarin speaking masses. They were probably the
local group that released the most records in different languages including
Mandarin, English, Hokkien, Cantonese, both instrumentals and vocals, and
even a few Malay albums. The group produced more than a thousand records in
total, which also included works with other popular artistes from
Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and Indonesia. Some of these
artistes included Wang Chin Yuen, Chang Xiao Yin, Lena Lim, Lin Ying,
Victor Wu Kang, Yuli, Chen Jie, Maggie & Judy Teng, Chopstick Sisters,
Pearl Sisters, comedians Wang Sa & Ya Fung, Nan Hong, Donny Yap, Kok Peng
Kim, Huang Li Qin, Simon Junior, Rahiman Rahim, Chen Kum Cheong, Long Piau
Piau, Yao Su Rong, Zhang Wei Wei, Fong Fei Fei, Jenny Tseng, Lau Chi Weng,
Ervinna, Robin, Lisa Wong, Michelle Xie, and Huang Xiao Jun among others.
In addition, the group recorded with more than 30 different recording
companies from the region. The group’s repertoire of Eastern and Western
music ranges from A-Go-Go, Off-Beat Cha Cha, Classical Chinese
Instrumentals, Soul, Rhythm & Blues and more.
The group’s line-up remained stabilized until 1980 when Lawrence Lum from
the SBC Orchestra replaced the late Alvin Wong. Members of the Stylers also
set up their own recording company with themselves and their manager Ronald
Tham as shareholders.
Like all successful groups, The Stylers band also eased out of the
entertainment circles gradually in the 1990s when Robert Song migrated to
the Philippines while John and Randy decided to venture into other
businesses. But their music still lives on till this day and members of the
group are still active in the music scene.

Коллектив Jacula был собран вокруг композитора, гитариста и по
совместительству тёмного философа Anthony Bartoccetti в 1968 году.
Остальные участники трио были тоже нетривиальны: Charles Tiring, вдвое
старше остальных, играл на настоящем церковном органе, а
мультиинструменталистка, вокалистка и звукоинженер Doris Norton увлекалась
экспериментальной электронной музыкой (и это в 60-х годах). Взгляды
Антонио, как идейного предводителя, сразу определили идеологический
стержень и стиль звучания группы: мрачный и минималистичный мелодизм
непрерывно звучащего органа, минорные тональности, торжественные декламации
оккультного характера. Всё это создаёт атмосферу некоего мрачного и
торжественного ритуального действа. Но всё-таки это были 60-е, а потому в
приоритете были антивоенные и экологические темы. Рабочим названием альбома
было Volume Zero, а для записи альбома был создан свой лейбл Gnome, на
котором в количестве 300 экземпляров в 1969 году и был выпущен In Cauda
Semper Stat Venenum, вроде как разошедшийся по друзьям и соратникам по
культу. Выпустив в 1972 году второй альбом, Anthony Bartoccetti заявил, что
проект является ошибкой юности, и переименовал лавочку в Antonius Rex с
менее экстравагантным подходом к творчеству. Спустя почти четыре
десятилетия Jacula выпустил свой третий студийный альбом Pre Viamin (2011).

It happens so rarely, but it does happen. Genuine experimental-music
madmen, working as pop-music producers, find sounds that capture the
collective imagination, and they take those sounds all the way to #1. Lee
Hazlewood did it. Giorgio Moroder did it. Timbaland did it. Maybe Pharrell
and Metro Boomin belongs in that lineage, too. But before any of them,
there was Joe Meek, an absolute visionary who also turned out to be a
dangerously depressed murderer.
During the pre-Beatles era, Meek found his calling by making strange,
damaged pop songs like John Leyton’s “Johnny Remember Me” and the
Honeycombs’ “Have I The Right,” two beautiful curiosities that topped the
singles charts in the UK. For many of those productions, Meek used an
in-studio band called the Tornados. And in 1962, inspired by the launch of
an AT&T communications satellite, Meek recorded the Tornados playing
“Telstar,” an instrumental that he’d written, which topped charts on both
sides of the Atlantic a full year before the Beatles would repeat the same
feat.“Telstar” is an early example of pop-music sci-fi, and it’s the
starry-eyed optimistic sci-fi of those early space-race years. It’s all
whooshes and tinkles, everything in service of a tingly melody that somehow
recalls both the Star Trek theme and the alien-spaceship jingle of Close
Encounters Of The Third Kind, despite predating both of them by years. The
keyboard sound reaches out toward some imaginary, otherworldly utopia, and
the beat quietly pounds behind it, making it all feel urgent. It sounds
exciting, the way it might’ve once felt exciting to look up at the night
sky and to imagine that, for the first time ever, there was a benign human
presence there, keeping an eye on you, connecting you to the rest of the
world. It’s a song that sounds in love with the potential of human
achievement.
But despite all the optimism in the song, it wouldn’t bring anything good
for Meek. The French composer Jean Ledrut sued Meek for plagiarism,
alleging that Meek had stolen the “Telstar” melody from Ledrut’s score for
the movie Austerlitz and tying Meek up in courts for years. Meek won that
lawsuit, but not until he’d been dead for a year. Meek, it bears
mentioning, suffered from serious depression, which might’ve been because
he was a closeted gay man who’d been prosecuted and blackmailed. He was
also a true eccentric who believed that he could communicate with the
spirit of Buddy Holly. In 1967, on the eighth anniversary of Holly’s death,
Meek used a shotgun, which he’d borrowed from former Tornados bassist Heinz
Burt, to murder his landlady and to take his own life.
The lives of plenty of the people who make these songs turn out in dark
ways, but none of them, as far as I know, have turned out darker than
Meek’s. And yet a more stable person might not have had the brilliance to
take these strange sounds and to turn them into something as beautiful as
“Telstar.” It’s hard to even consider Meek’s aesthetic legacy when you
think about how he died, and yet his aesthetic legacy is a thing to behold.

Eric Burdon & The Animals

The Animals


One of the most important bands originating from England's R&B scene during
the early '60s, the Animals were second only to the Rolling Stones in
influence among R&B-based bands in the first wave of the British Invasion.
The Animals had their origins in a Newcastle-based group called the Kansas
City Five, whose membership included pianist Alan Price, drummer John
Steel, and vocalist Eric Burdon. Price exited to join the Kontours in 1962,
while Burdon went off to London. The Kontours, whose membership included
Bryan "Chas" Chandler, eventually were transmuted into the Alan Price R&B
Combo, with John Steel joining on drums. Burdon's return to Newcastle in
early 1963 heralded his return to the lineup. The final member of the
combo, guitarist Hilton Valentine, joined just in time for the recording of
a self-produced EP under the band's new name, the Animals. That record
alerted Graham Bond to the Animals; he was likely responsible for pointing
impresario Giorgio Gomelsky to the group.
The Animals [Compilation]Gomelsky booked the band into his Crawdaddy Club
in London, and they were subsequently signed by Mickie Most, an independent
producer who secured a contract with EMI's Columbia imprint. A studio
session in February 1964 yielded their Columbia debut single, "Baby Let Me
Take You Home" (adapted from "Baby Let Me Follow You Down"), which rose to
number 21 on the British charts. For years, it was rumored incorrectly that
the Animals got their next single, "House of the Rising Sun," from Bob
Dylan's first album, but it has been revealed that, like "Baby Let Me Take
You Home," the song came to them courtesy of Josh White. In any event, the
song -- given a new guitar riff by Valentine and a soulful organ
accompaniment devised by Price -- shot to the top of the U.K. and U.S.
charts early that summer. This success led to a follow-up session that
summer, yielding their first long-playing record, The Animals. Their third
single, "I'm Crying," rose to number eight on the British charts. The group
compiled an enviable record of Top Ten successes, including "Don't Let Me
Be Misunderstood" and "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place," along with a
second album, Animal Tracks.In May of 1965, immediately after
recording "We've Gotta Get Out of This Place," Alan Price left the band,
citing fear of flying as the reason; subsequent biographies of the band
have indicated that the reasons were less psychological. When "House of the
Rising Sun" was recorded, using what was essentially a group arrangement,
the management persuaded the band to put one person's name down as
arranger. Price came up the lucky one, supposedly with the intention that
the money from the arranger credit would be divided later on. The money was
never divided, however, and as soon as it began rolling in, Price suddenly
developed his fear of flying and exited the band. Others cite the
increasing contentiousness between Burdon and Price over leadership of the
group as the latter's reason for leaving. In any case, a replacement was
recruited in the person of Dave Rowberry.
Animalisms In the meantime, the group was growing increasingly unhappy with
the material they were being given to record by manager Mickie Most. Not
only were the majority of these songs much too commercial for their taste,
but they represented a false image of the band, even if many were
successful. "It's My Life," a number seven British hit and a similar smash
in America, caused the Animals to terminate their association with Most and
with EMI Records. They moved over to Decca/London Records and came up with
a more forceful, powerful sound on their first album for the new label,
Animalisms. The lineup shifts continued, however: Steel exited in 1966,
after recording Animalisms, and was replaced by Barry Jenkins, formerly of
the Nashville Teens. Chandler left in mid-1966 after recording "Don't Bring
Me Down," and Valentine remained until the end of 1966, but
essentially "Don't Bring Me Down" marked the end of the original
Animals.Eric Is HereBurdon re-formed the group under the aegis of Eric
Burdon and the New Animals, with Jenkins on drums, John Weider on guitar
and violin, Danny McCulloch on bass, and Vic Briggs on guitar. He remained
officially a solo act for a time, releasing a collection of material called
Eric Is Here in 1967. As soon as the contract with English Decca was up,
Burdon signed with MGM directly for worldwide distribution, and the new
lineup made their debut in mid-1967. Eric Burdon and the New Animals
embraced psychedelica to the hilt amid the full bloom of the Summer of
Love. By the end of 1968, Briggs and McCulloch had departed, to be replaced
by Burdon's old friend, keyboard player/vocalist Zoot Money, and his
longtime stablemate, guitarist Andy Summers, while Weider switched to bass.
Finally, in 1969, Burdon pulled the plug on what was left of the Animals.
He hooked up with a Los Angeles-based group called War, and started a
subsequent solo career.Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted The original
Animals reunited in 1976 for a superb album called Before We Were So Rudely
Interrupted, which picked up right where Animalisms had left off a decade
earlier and which was well-received critically but failed to capture the
public's attention. In 1983, a somewhat longer-lasting reunion came about
between the original members, augmented with the presence of Zoot Money on
keyboards. The resulting album, Ark, consisting of entirely new material,
was well received by critics and charted surprisingly high, and a world
tour followed. By the end of the year and the heavy touring schedule,
however, it was clear that this reunion was not going to be a lasting
event. The quintet split up again, having finally let the other shoe drop
on their careers and history, and walked away with some financial rewards,
along with memories of two generations of rock fans cheering their every
note.



As the lead singer of the Animals, Eric Burdon was one of the British
Invasion's most distinctive vocalists, with a searingly powerful blues-rock
voice. When the first lineup of the group fell apart in 1966, Burdon kept
the Animals' name going with various players for a few years. Usually
billed as Eric Burdon & the Animals, the group was essentially Burdon's
vehicle, which he used to purvey a far more psychedelic and less
R&B-oriented vision. Occasionally he came up with a good second-division
psychedelic hit, like "Sky Pilot"; more often, the music was indulgent,
dating it almost immediately. Burdon's real triumphs as a solo artist came
at the beginning of the '70s, when he hooked up with a bunch of L.A.
journeyman soul/funksters who became his backing band, War. Recording three
albums' worth of material in the year or two that they were together, the
Burdon/War records could ramble on interminably, and would have benefited
from a lot of editing. But they contained some spacy funkadelia of real
quality, especially their number three hit single "Spill the Wine," which
was almost recorded as an afterthought in the midst of sessions dominated
by exploratory jams. Eric Burdon & War were already big stars on record and
stage when Burdon, for reasons unclear to almost everyone, quit the band in
1971. War defied expectations and became even bigger when left to their own
devices; Burdon, after recording an album with veteran bluesman Jimmy
Witherspoon, cut a series of generally desultory solo albums. He recorded
off and on after that, at times with the Animals, but has never come close
to reaching the heights of his work with the early Animals and War. Burdon
was always a riveting live performer, though, and he continued to tour with
various incarnations of the Animals and as a solo act, branching out as a
painter and author as well, and working in the studio when it suited him.
My Secret LifeBurdon continued on this journeyman path until well into the
new millennium, recording such solid albums as 2004's My Secret Life and
2006's Soul of a Man. In 2012, he experienced an unexpected comeback when
Bruce Springsteen made him a cornerstone of his keynote speech at South by
Southwest. Burdon joined Springsteen on-stage and was soon in demand.
First, he recorded an EP with the Ohio-based garage rockers the
Greenhornes, and then he devoted himself to the full-length 'Til Your River
Runs Dry, which received a high-profile launch in January

"Matthew and Son" is a single written, composed, and performed by Cat Stevens. It was selected as the title song for his 1967 debut album. Stevens was a newly signed teenage singer-songwriter, who performed to elaborate arrangements quite different from the skiffle which had, in part, inspired him to begin writing and performing.
The song remains Cat Stevens' highest charting single in the British Isles, reaching Number 2 in the UK and Number 3 in Ireland in early 1967.

Chuck Berry Is on Top is the third studio album by rock and roll pioneer Chuck Berry, released in July 1959 on Chess Records, catalogue LP 1435. With the exception of one track, "Blues for Hawaiians," all selections had been previously released on 45 rpm singles, several of which were double-sided and charted twice. In his review of the album for AllMusic, Cub Koda described it as "almost a mini-greatest-hits package in and of itself" and the most perfectly realized collection of Berry's career. In 2008, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab reissued the album with St. Louis to Liverpool on an Ultradisc II Gold compact disc. In 2012, Hoodoo reissued the album with One Dozen Berrys on the same CD.

Live at the Star Club is a 1964 live album by rock and roll pianist Jerry
Lee Lewis and The Nashville Teens. The album was recorded at the Star-Club
in Hamburg, Germany on April 5, 1964. It is regarded by many music
journalists as one of the wildest and greatest rock and roll concert albums
ever. The album appears in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You
Die.Live at the Star Club was produced by Siggi Loch, who was head of the
jazz department at Philips Records. In Joe Bonomo's book Lost And Found,
Loch states that "...I realized that there were all of these young, mainly
British, bands who were playing Chuck Berry and other white American rock &
rollers, their big heroes...And I went to the owner and made a proposal to
start recording bands at the Star-Club, which I did." According to Loch the
recording setup was uncomplicated, with microphones placed as close to the
instruments as possible with a stereo mike placed in the audience to
capture the ambience. The results were sonically astonishing, with Bonomo
observing that "Detractors complain of the album's crashing noisiness, the
lack of subtlety with which Jerry Lee revisits the songs, the fact that the
piano is mixed too loudly, but what is certain is that Siggi Loch on this
spring evening captured something brutally honest about the Killer, about
the primal and timeless center of the very best rock & roll..."
Sixteen songs were recorded over two sets, the first set comprising "Down
The Line,""You Win Again,""High School Confidential,""Your Cheatin'
Heart,""Great Balls of Fire,""What'd I Say (Parts 1 & 2), and "Mean Woman
Blues." The second set featured "Good Golly Miss
Molly,""Matchbox,""Money,""Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On,""Lewis
Boogie,""Hound Dog,""Long Tall Sally" and "I'm On Fire.""Down The
Line," omitted on the original LP due to a sound fault at the beginning,
was released on French Mercury single Les Rois du Rock, Vol. 8 : Jerry Lee
Lewis and included on later CD and LP releases of Bear Family Records. The
tapes for "You Win Again" and "I'm On Fire" are believed to have been lost.
For decades the album was available only in Europe due to legal
constraints. In 2014, Lewis told biographer Rick Bragg "Oh, man, that was a
big monster record" but that the record company "never paid me a penny."
Speaking to Patrick Doyle of Rolling Stone in 2014, Lewis remained proud
that he "stuck with rock & roll when the rest of them didn't, I kept the
ball rollin' with that."

Na primeira metade da década de setenta, o Uriah Heep certamente foi uma
das mais importantes bandas de rock da Inglaterra que, até nos dias atuais,
é lembrada por seus clássicos álbuns e pelo grande dilema tanto discutido
pelos fãs por se tratar de uma banda de Rock Progressivo (Heavy Prog) ou
simplesmente uma banda de Hard Rock. Particularmente, fico com a primeira
opção pelo menos no decorrer da primeira leva de sua extensa discografia,
lançada entre os anos de 1970 e 1976.

O culpado de toda essa minha convicção atende pelo nome de Ken Hensley que,
na minha lista, figura entre os cinco maiores tecladistas de todos os
tempos, onde estava sempre munido de um poderoso Hammond, acompanhado de
belas harmonias de piano e suntuosos solos de Moog. Hensley também foi
responsável pela autoria da grande maioria das composições da fase áurea da
banda, além de contribuir com algumas passagens de guitarra e violão.

Nessa publicação, temos a formação 'clássica' do Uriah Heep que contava com
a extrema energia do vocal do falecido David Byron, contagiante e muito
marcante em todos os momentos, a pesada cozinha baixo e bateria conduzida,
pelo também falecido Gary Thain e Lee Kerslake respectivamente, que sempre
dão um show a parte seja em estúdio ou ao vivo. Sem contar com os fortes
riffs de guitarra do mestre Mick Box mesclados ao poderoso arsenal de Ken
Hensley.

Gravado em 08 de Fevereiro de 1974 em San Diego, CA, esse bootleg é
constituído por faixas de discos altamente clássicos como
Very 'Eavy...Very 'Umble, Salisbury, Look at Yourself, Magician´s Birthday,
o recém lançado Sweet Freedom e o indispensável Demons and Wizards, sendo
este último um dos melhores e mais importantes álbuns produzidos por uma
banda inglesa nos anos 70.

A qualidade do áudio encontra-se excelente e disponibilizado em FLAC para
uma melhor apreciação.

Группа из Стокгольма, создана в 1969 году басистом Christer Stålbrandt,
ударником Björn Inge и гитаристом Richard Rolf. В первом составе группы в
качестве гитариста был Snowy White, который, впрочем, ушел еще до того, как
они сменили название Train на November, а в качестве замены был
рекрутирован Richard Rolf – и уже с ним произошло первое выступление группы
1 ноября 1969 года на разогреве у Fleetwood Mac в Que-Club в Гётеборге.
Одна из первых шведских рок-групп, исполняющая свои песни на шведском
языке. Но это не помешало группе быть популярной в Британии. Всего Ноябрь
выпустили 3 лонгплея. После роспуска группы в 1972 году Christer Stålbrandt
вошёл в Saga, Björn Inge в Energy, Richard Rolf в Bash, затем в Nature.
Несомненно, November одна из лучших шведских групп начала 70-х.

International Beat Festival has been a huge yearly international battle of
the bands that was organized by the Star Club and held at the huge Plankten
Und Plomen park in Hamburg. The Red Devils from Basel first went there to
play in 1964 as the first Swiss band to ever play at the legendary Star
Club in Hamburg! On Thursday, the 2nd September of 1965 The Red Devils went
by train to Hamburg, Germany to play for three days during the weekend of
Friday, September 3. - Sunday, September 5. 1965 at the International Beat
Festival for the 2nd time again! After the festival was over they were
invited along with The Phantom Brothers, The Beatmakers, Lord Heinz & The
Young Ones, The Cavern Cats, The Shutters, and The Sheapes (also from

Gary U.S. Bonds - Dedication (1981)

“Dedication” is an album released by Gary U.S. Bonds in 1981, the first of
two on which he collaborated with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.
The musicians accompanying Bonds on the album include many members of the E
Street Band and the Asbury Jukes. The album includes three songs written by
Bruce Springsteen, one written by Steve Van Zandt, and several covers of
songs from the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, and others. It also
features a duet between Bonds and Springsteen on the Cajun traditional
track "Jole Blon". Bonds' early 1960s sound had been a major influence on
both Springsteen and Van Zandt.
The songs written by Springsteen, including the cover of "Jole Blon", were
originally intended for his 1980 album, “The River”, but he felt they
fitted better with Bonds and his versions of them have never been released
although he has performed most of them live, often featuring Bonds as a
special guest.

Bruce Springsteen played guitar, sang a duet, wrote three songs, and
co-produced and co-arranged four on Gary U.S. Bonds' comeback album,
recorded 20 years after his heyday. Springsteen also lent his backup group,
The E Street Band, while E Street guitarist Miami Steve (Van Zandt) also
contributed a song and produced the bulk of the record. The result,
naturally, sounds like a Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band album with
lead vocals by Gary U.S. Bonds. Bonds' elastic tenor, heard in much greater
clarity than it ever was in his early years, has just enough grit to be
soulful, and he puts across the pop-soul tunes Springsteen and Van Zandt
have constructed for him effectively. He also tackles the Beatles'"It's
Only Love" and Bob Dylan's "From a Buick 6," and sings Jackson
Browne's "The Pretender" as if the lyric was devoid of irony. It's an
enjoyable album that does nothing to change the notion that Bonds as a
recording artist essentially conforms himself to the intentions of his
producer, whether that's Frank Guida, Jerry Williams, Jr., or Bruce
Springsteen.

whizz kid dabbling on the fringes of the music business who harboured
dreams of establishing himself as a manager/producer in the Andrew Loog
Oldham/Larry Page mould'. It was Nicolson who financed the Wild Oats' first
trip to a recording studio in mid-1963, when versions of Marvin
Rainwater's 'Whole Lotta Woman' and an obscure Elvis Presley song 'Put The
Blame On Me' were cut at the R G Jones studio in Morden.....

It's probably fair to say that, when the definitive guide to rock history
is written, the small Suffolk town of Leiston is unlikely to merit a
mention; the town's only real claim to fame is its disturbingly close
proximity to the Sizewell B nuclear power station. However, whilst the
Suffolk Sound never threatened to rival Merseybcat as a musical phenomenon,
Leiston did briefly boast a class R&B act of its own in the mid-1960s.
Given average luck and a following wind, the Wild Oats may well have
developed along the same lines as more celebrated bands of the era such as
the Hollies and the Searchers, but despite a hugely popular live set, that
all-important recording contract failed to materialise, and the band seemed
destined to remain a well-kept local secret when they went their separate
ways in 1967. So it proved for almost a quarter of a century. By the early
1990s, however, the Wild Oats had been afforded cult status by collectors
due to the belated discovery of a handful of tracks that they had recorded
on the fiercely collected Oak custom label, a division of the R G Jones
recording studio of Morden in Surrey, where acts of the calibre of the
Stones, the Kinks and the Yardbirds had all cut their first demonstration
discs. The success in 1994 of Tenth Planet's anthology of Oak artefacts,
including the Wild Oats' version of the R&B classic 'You Can't Judge A Book
By Its Cover', led the band to unearth tapes of a vintage Wild Oats
performance in May 1964, when they were captured at the International Club
in Leiston by a domestic reel to reel tape recorder that had been set up by
two of their more fervent supporters. The result is 'Live At Leiston', not
only an accurate representation of what the Wild Oats were doing in May
1964 but a fascinating snapshot of contemporaneous British pop music in a
month when the singles chart was topped by the Searchers, the Four Pennies
and Cilla Black (whatever happened to her?).The roots of the Wild Oats can
be traced back to February 1960 when schoolfriends Trcv Rowland and Willy
Brown, suitably inspired by the exploits of Lonnie Donegan, formed a
skiffle group in their hometown of Leiston in a remote corner of rural
Suffolk. A parallel enterprise as an Everly Brothers-style vocal duo also
began around this time, but by the end of the year guitarist Rowland and
vocalist Brown had recruited Stykx Scarlett (drums), Rod Goldsmith (bass)
and Carl Harrison (vocals) to form the Rebels. With the acquisition in
early 1961 of guitarist Robin Hare (who joined from the Nightjars, another
local act) and saxophonist Ron Philpot, the Rebels took to the stage as a
fully fledged rock'n'roll outfit playing cover versions of recent hits.
With few other local bands around, the Rebels had the scene pretty much to
themselves. Appearing at clubs and village halls in the Lciston area, they
slowly began to build a sizeable local following, often playing to crowds
in excess of 300.

was in full swing, and the Wild Oats' switch from rock'n'roll material to a
more R&B-derived sound was a logical progression. This transition was
accelerated by the influence of their new manager Chas Philpot (brother of
Ron, who by now had left the band), who introduced his charges to the
delights of obscure black American R&B and soul music. With a suitably
revised repertoire, the Wild Oats found themselves in greater demand than
ever. They began to perform regularly at local air bases as well as clubs
in the Norwich, Ipswich and Colchester areas. The band also became a
popular attraction at hunt balls and debutante parties (leading to a
mention in the society magazine Tatler) as well as playing at various
London clubs. They also performed at the world-famous London Savoy Hotel,
where they were nearly refused entry due to their 'unsuitable' appearance,
but declined an invitation to appear at the Star Club in Hamburg, deciding
that the notorious Reeperbahn district was no place for a bunch of
clean-living Leiston lads to be hanging out.
By late 1963 the Wild Oats were acting as backing band for the stage
appearances of another of David Nicolson's progenies, Crispian St Peters,
as well as returning to R G Jones to record a limited edition EP on the Oak
label. 'You Can't Judge A Book By Its Covcr', 'Walking The Dog', 'Will You
Still Love Me Tomorrow?' and another attempt at 'Put The Blame On Me' were
issued in an attractive picture sleeve, but the release failed to attract
the attentions of a larger record company. Today a pristine copy of the EP,
complete with original sleeve, is valued by Record Collector magazine at a
cool Ј500.
1964 proved to be an eventful year for the band. They entered the
All-England Big Beat Competition (an event sponsored by electrical giants
Grundig) and were adjudged joint winners after appearing at the Marconi
Club in Chelmsford, Essex. Their prize was a recording session at Radio
Luxembourg, and the two tracks that were laid down under the aegis of
presenter Philip Waddilove were subsequently broadcast by the station.
Around this juncture the Wild Oats discarded their Fender Stratocasters in
favour of Gibson semi-acoustics in order to approximate the Chicago blues
sound, and further recordings were made at the City of London studios in an
attempt to showcase the band's new musical emphasis. Versions of the Mary
Wells hit 'Bye Bye Baby' and Sugar Pie De Santo's 'Soulful Dress' (a song
that had been recommended to them by future Moody Blues manager Denny
Cordell) were recorded, but the band were dissatisfied with the results.
Notwithstanding this disappointment, a regular support slot at Gorleston
Floral Hall enabled the Wild Oats to appear on the same bill as many of the
biggest names of the era including the Kinks (who apparently were given a
decidedly mixed reception), the Hollies, the Animals and Georgic Fame. Now
playing to increasingly large audiences, the Wild Oats paid greater
attention than before to sartorial matters, and their wardrobe included
leather waistcoats, shirts and trousers from John Stephen in Carnaby
Street, cuban heeled boots from Anello and Davide in Charing Cross Road and
brown mohair suits from Cecil Gee in Shaftesbury Avenue.
Despite such fastidious grooming, the Wild Oats' main aim was to enjoy
themselves, and their youthful exuberance was evident both onstage and off.
After one London gig an inebriated Robin Hare walked through Soho in the
early hours of the morning with a dustbin lid stuck to either foot. He was
spotted by two policemen who immediately gave chase. The guitarist managed
to shake one foot loose, but couldn't remove the dustbin lid from his other
foot - nevertheless, he still managed to outrun his pursuers! The band's
appearances at deb balls were also memorable experiences. They would play
for anything up to four hours at a time, taking liquid refreshment (usually
champagne) whilst on stage. Inevitably their performance was rather more
rugged and raucous by the end of the show than at the beginning! Their
willingness to play long hours was also rewarded financially, and at one
venue they were paid more than the Hollies (at the time topping the chart
with'I'm Alive') had received the previous week for a briefer appearance.
A further acetate coupling 'Route 66' and 'Fanny Mac' was made at Tont'
Pike's studio in early 1965, but the band were unhappy both with the sound
quality and their own performance. Shortly afterwards Graham Baldn'
replaced Rod Goldsmith, who left due to musical differences. Robin Hare
moved from guitar to Farfisa organ as the Wild Oats became increasingly
influenced by soul music, covering material initially recorded by Lee
Dorsey, Otis Redding and Wilson Pickctt. By this stage, however, the more
successful British acts were moving away from the R&B/soul axis and into
more experimental areas. By the time that the Wild Oats officially folded
in late 1967 (Mick Hughes had replaced the disillusioned Trcs' Rowland in
November 1966), the band had become somethnig of a musical anachronism.
Their failure to progress from cover versions to scif-permcd material had
condemned them to a finite shelf life, and they were inevitably overtaken
by events as the musical and cultural epicentre shifted inexorably from
Liverpool to San Francisco. Occasional reunions; - the last as recently as
December 1994- have all been greeted by packed houses, confirmation that
their reputation on a local level remains fully intact thirty, years after
their hcydav.
The posthumous appearance of 'Live At Leiston' is undoubtedly an unexpected
but welcome appendage to the Wild Oats story, but the album's appeal surely
extends beyond such parochial realms. 'Live At Leiston constitutes a
fascinating and important historical document, not because the Wild Oats
were a uniquely individual talent but for precisely the opposite reason.
All live albums issued during the beat/R&B era showcased the undisputed
market leaders such as the Stones, the Yardbirds and the Kinks. The Wild
Oats, however, can be considered as Everyman (or rather Everyband): had the
proverbial Martian alighted from a passing spacecraft on a Saturday night
in 1964 and wandered into any village hall or local hop the length and
breadth of Britain, the chances are that he would have witnessed an almost
identical set from any one of the multitude of local heroes taking their
musical cue from their more illustrious peers. Extraterrestrials aside, the
exhumation of 'Live At Leiston' finally gives rock historians and
collectors alike the chance to hear the authentic sound of the suburbs as
it stood in May 1964, srhcn provincial bands ruled British pop and British
pop ruled the world.

"Ferry Cross the Mersey" (sometimes written Ferry 'Cross the Mersey) is a
song written by Gerry Marsden. It was first recorded by his band Gerry and
the Pacemakers and released in late 1964 in the UK and in 1965 in the
United States. It was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, reaching number
six in the United States and number eight in the UK. The song is from the
film of the same name and was released on its soundtrack album. In the
mid-1990s a musical theatre production also titled Ferry Cross the Mersey
related Gerry Marsden's Merseybeat days; it premiered in Liverpool and
played in the UK, Australia, and Canada.


Ferry Cross the Mersey is the soundtrack for the film of the same title. It
features music by Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Fourmost, Cilla Black and the
George Martin Orchestra.

The Decca audition material, with the exception of three tracks had been
around for a while on the gray market, butas the result of legal action by
Apple, they reverted back to bootleg status and Yellow Dog managed to get
the firstrelease on CD sourced from a tape source.Unfortunately the speed
was off and this was latter corrected on The Early Years, 1962, Decca Tapes
Revised,Right Speed , being Disc One of their Ultimate Collection Volume
One Box set and shortly after on a standalone disc The Decca Tapes in 1995 .
The Cavern Rehearsal Tape, had appeared several times at this point and may
have been of marginal better quality, however with the release of the
Ultimate Collection Volume 1 , there was a clear upgrade, so the dispute as
towhat was the core source in 1991 is now some what mute.You may have
noticed the limited number of FAKES, I can only put this down to these been
released after the 1993speed corrected upgrades. The one fake is the Common
1993 Kiss The Stone Digipak fake which had alternatemastering and a poor

The Luv'd Ones were an American, all-female rock group, of the 1960s.
Char Vinnedge's career as lead guitarist / singer began in the early 1960s
with her all-girl group The Tremolons, in which she initially played all
instrumentals and recorded a single on Wildwood Records (Benton Harbor,
Michigan) for Komotion Music that contained: "Please Let Me Know"
(w/vocals) and "Theme For A DJ" (instrumental). About a year later, they
signed a record deal with Dunwich Records, changed their name to The Luv'd
Ones, and released several more singles over a five-year period, mostly
written by Char Vinnedge. The band broke up in 1969.
After Luv'd Ones, Vinnedge founded the group Syrup. In 1971, she recorded
an album, Nitro Function, with Billy Cox, the bass player for Jimi Hendrix.
The group was signed to Pye Records in 1971.
In the late 1990s the Luv'd Ones signed a five-year deal with Sundazed
Records. In 1999 they released all of the Luv'd Ones' Dunwich Records
singles and a large collection of their demos on the album Truth Gotta
Stand, and at the same time released a four-song EP of the Tremolons music.
The project was started in 1997, but Vinnedge died of a heart attack in
December of that same year. In 2005, after the deal with Sundazed Records,
Rhino Records signed the Luv'd Ones for the single "Up Down Sue", and
released it on a four CD box set compilation album, One Kiss Can Lead To

" The Storms were blown away by J.Kidd & The Pirates as early as 1963, and
promptly acquired black&white naval shirts & leather waistcoats etc... This
cover of I CAN TELL clearly shows the Pirates influence on The Storms,
above all that of the incomparable MICK GREEN, rip. Wthout ever meaning to,
the heart of our show became a Pirates tribute before most people had even
noticed them. To grasp the impact of the Pirates style on young ears, one
has to remember that The Shadows were huge in those years. Hank Marvin was
also highly influential ( & other Shadows), but we needed more 'anger' in
the mix to express who we were and where we lived. The Pirates gave it in
spades, and they are now loved by many. ( What a weird thing to do with a
Fender Telecaster and a Gibson EB-2 bass ? ) ... " ~

The Liverpool Five were a beat group that was part of the British
Invasion-era of the 1960s. The five members of the band went to the United
States by way of Japan in 1965.
Formed in England in 1963 as the Steve Laine Combo, the group comprised
Steve Laine (lead vocals), Ken Cox (guitar and vocals), Dave Burgess (bass
and vocals), Ron Henley (keyboards, sax and vocals) and Jimmy May (drums
and vocals). Despite the name, none of the group members were from
Liverpool; all were Londoners except Burgess, who hailed from Cumbria.
The group played in many major cities in Europe and Asia before achieving
their greatest success in the United States, especially between 1964 and
1967. In Europe they recorded as 'The Boasters' for the International label
four tracks.And as accompaniment for German singer 'Tommy Kent' two tracks
(Ariola).
One album for CBS titled 'Tokio International', and a single "Tokio"
/ "SkinnyMinny", under the name 'The 5 Liverpools', a new name given to
them by their German manager. While in Germany in 1964 the band
successfully auditioned to tour Japan, and performed at the Tokyo Olympics.
One UK single, "Good Golly Miss Molly" / "Lum D' Lum D' Lum High (Mickeys
Monkey)", as 'The Liverpool 5', was released (same recording as
CBS-Germany) on the Pye subsidiary label, Piccadilly Records 1255 in 1964.
After touring Asia, where few other British rock bands had been, they moved
to the US West Coast where they re-settled as residents in California. From
their new base, they played all over the US and Canada, sometimes by
themselves and other times with such notable acts as The Lovin' Spoonful,
Stevie Wonder, The Kinks and The Rolling Stones. One of the band's biggest
US concerts was as a featured artist on the 'Beach Boys Summer Spectacular'
at the Hollywood Bowl in July 1965, alongside The Beach Boys, The Righteous
Brothers and The Byrds.
In the United States, under contract with RCA Victor, the group released a
number of singles, together with two albums produced by Al Schmitt. In 1966
their recording of Chip Taylor's "Any Way That You Want Me" (b/w Oscar
Brown Jr's "The Snake") would mark their only appearance on the national
chart, spending one week on the Billboard Hot 100 at #98.[4] They also
played on many television shows such as American Bandstand, Where the
Action Is and Hullabaloo, plus many music shows on local stations
throughout the US. Local radio stations often sponsored their concerts.
Some sources claim the group were the first to record "(I'm Not Your)
Steppin' Stone", although the first released version was by Paul Revere and
The Raiders.
Two albums on RCA Victor, Arrive (LSP 3583) (1966) and Out of Sight (LSP
3682) (1967), were reasonably successful for the group, particularly in the
Pacific Northwest. The group disbanded in 1968 and by then Fred Dennis,
later of the Sonics from Spokane, Washington had replaced Dave Burgess on
bass. Drummer Jimmy May returned to live in England while the others
remained in the United States and embarked on new careers in various
professins.
Before finally disbanding, they recorded one last single for RCA under the
name Common Market (RCA 47-9302). The tracks were the Cat Stevens-penned "I
Love My Dog" backed with Tim Buckley's "Wings".
