Дебютный альбом британской джаз-фьюжн группы, созданной басистом Jeff Clyne
и клавишником Brian Miller. Образцом для подражания группе во многом служил
коллектив Nucleus, в деятельности которого на протяжении 1969-71 годов
активно участвовал Jeff Clyne. Параллельно он сотрудничал с Keith Tippett и
Kevin Ayers, а позднее – с Centipede, Isotope, Gilgamesh, Allan Holdsworth
и многими другими. Задумывая Turning Point, Clyne изначально полагал, что
опорой команды станут джазмены. Так оно и случилось. Единственным
человеком, имевшим хоть какое-то отношение к року (не считая самого
Джеффа), был Brian Miller (Isotope). Остальные участники группы душой и
сердцем принадлежали джазу. Они записали два альбома и оба на лейбле Gull
Records.

The best Swiss Shadows were The 16 Strings from Olten. The quartet, already
in the late fifties Years ago, when The Rocking Boys made an appearance, it
seemed to specialize in talent competitions. Right from the start, they put
on a dignified style, had their expensive band suits tailored and put the

Rock was not a business on records yet, at least not for the musicians.
There helped too professional management and a serious demeanor, as the 16
strings cultivated, no further. The Star of the guitar orchestra began with
the announcing beat boom and the competition of whole Flocks of amateur
bands anyway to fade. The 16 strings are closed to the vociferous sound of
the hour not. They were among the first, the Beatles songs right in
multipack in recorded their repertoire. In 1965 they played another single
in Basel called 'Alles ist Allright'. The neat Beromьnster version of a
John D. Loudermilk song, whose silly text cabaret man Max Rьeger,
aka 'Schnultzen-Max', had his conscience. The plate was also not better,

dilemma remained: there was the status of the 16 strings as one of the
first and best Swiss guitar bands, there were good relationships too

Review by FPL: "Locksley Hall" was one of the better known psychedelic
bands in the Pacific Northwest during their existence from 1967 thru' 1970
(but now long forgotten). The album was recorded in 1969 at the legendary
Audio Recorders in Seattle with long time Northwest guitarist Ned Neltner
(Mark Five, Gas Company, Junior Cadillac) producing and Sonics engineer
Kearny Barton at the console. It remained unreleased until the limited
edition came out in 1996. The album reminds us of every band who ever
played the Fillmore West in the late sixties and blends together elements
of It's A Beautiful Day, Jefferson Airplane and Big Brother and The Holding

David Michael Gordon Davey Graham (originally spelled Davy Graham) (26
November 1940 – 15 December 2008) was a British guitarist and one of the
most influential figures in the 1960s British folk revival. He inspired
many famous practitioners of the fingerstyle acoustic guitar such as Bert
Jansch, Wizz Jones, John Renbourn, Martin Carthy, John Martyn, Paul Simon
and Jimmy Page, who based his solo White Summer on Grahams She Moved
Through the Fair. Graham is probably best known for his acoustic
instrumental, Anji and for popularizing DADGAD tuning, later widely adopted
by acoustic guitarists.

Friar Tuck - Friar Tuck and his Psychedelic Guitar (1967)

It would be all too easy to simply write this off as a mere exploitation
knock-off designed to catch naive hippies. It certainly is that, but it
also has the hand (and voice) of Curt Boettcher all over it, and it
features Mike Deasy, heavy L.A. session cat and sometime-member of Phil
Spector's Wrecking Crew on guitar, musical arrangements and producing.
Consisting of about half covers and half originals, the album could hardly
be considered truly psychedelic (mostly thanks to the Boettcher vocals) but
it is quite interesting in its own way. Deasy's arrangements are strange
and wonderful with some hot guitar playing and liberal use of the echoplex.
He gives "Louie Louie," the quintessential simple rock & roll tune, a
wildly elaborate arrangement, virtually re-creating the tune entirely. He
gives Nat Adderly and Oscar Brown, Jr.'s "Work Song" an echoplex and guitar
intro, inserts a bit of twang then goes into a classical sounding passage
and back. Oddly enough, it also sounds reminiscent of the Count
Five's "Psychotic Reaction"! Deasy's ultra-stoned sounding vocals on "Alley
Oop" are hilarious. The originals can't be called instrumentals due to
Boettcher and company's ever present wordless vocals, which get really
bizarre on "Fendabenda Ha Ha Ha" and "Where Did Your Mind Go?." [These
tracks are a really odd combination of gonzo guitar soloing and the Living
Voices on acid. The bonus tracks by the Flower Pot have actual lyrics and
are less elaborately arranged than the Friar Tuck album, and have quite a
different feel to them. "Black Moto" and "Wantin' Ain't Gettin" even have
some sitar. Originally issued as 45 rpms, they're a nice addition and it
makes sense to gather Deasy's originals all in one place. All in all, Friar
Tuck & His Psychedelic Guitar is a thoroughly entertaining curiosity. [This
album was reissued in 2007 with four bonus tracks from the Flower Pot.]

Friar Tuck was a stage name for L.A. session guitarist Mike Deasy. The
Friar Tuck album is essentially a Mike Deasy solo album made with the help
of Deasy's studio friends. The March 1996 edition of Guitar Player Magazine
lists the Friar Tuck album as being in Jimi Hendrix' personal record
collection.

The ID -The Inner Sounds Of The Id (1967)

By 1967, psychedelia had become trendy and commercial enough that major
labels released goofy, self-conscious experimental psychedelic rock records
that didn't have a chance in hell of making the charts. RCA's The Inner
Sound of the Id was one such relic. Like some other obscure major-label
psychedelic products of the time, it seems like it might have been
a "psychsploitation" project that was designed more as a quick cash-in on a
fad rather than a sincerely ambitious musical endeavor. Some strange guitar
reverb and distortion, along with dashes of sitar and pseudo-Eastern
musical and mystical influences, couldn't disguise the shortage of good
songs and ideas and the overall aura of a strained attempt to be freaky.
The presence of well-traveled Los Angeles session guitarist Jerry Cole on
the LP makes one wonder if the Inner Sound of the Id were a studio-only
group.

Although the Id's sole and rare album is weird, it's weird in a forced,
mediocre fashion that makes it sound more like an exploitation of the
psychedelic movement than a genuine part of it. At times (particularly on
the songs with chanted pseudo-séance vocals), it's hard to tell whether
they're trying to emulate the early freakiness of the Mothers of Invention,
or whether they embody precisely the kind of mediocre California
psychedelic bands Frank Zappa viciously satirized on the Mothers' We're
Only in It for the Money. Some strange-on-the-sleeve efforts like "Wild
Times," with its gratuitous overlay of sitar sounds, sits cheek-by-cheek
with rather ordinary garage-pop/rock ("Baby Eyes") and melancholy
psych-folk-rock ("Stone & Steel"). The most famous cut, and probably the
most memorable due to its nonchalant oddness, is "Boil the Kettle, Mother,"
with its outlandish lyrics and poker-faced spoken vocal.

Jerry Cole is an excellent guitarist. Just the list in the liner notes of
several dozen stars on whose records he played -- including Frank Sinatra,
the Beach Boys, the Byrds, Phil Spector, Aretha Franklin, and Elvis Presley
for starters -- is a testament to that. Being a good guitarist and making
good records are different things, however. And while Cole did make a lot
of records on which he was the featured artist, many of them were quite
run-of-the-mill instrumentals. They form the main diet on this 24-track
collection of sides he played on for budget LPs on the Crown label in
1960-1966 that were attributed to numerous different artists, including not
just Jerry Cole, but also Jerry Kole, the Stingers, Billy Boyd, the
Scramblers, the Hot Rodders, the Winners, and even the Blasters (no, not
the Blasters with the Alvin brothers). While Cole's playing is accomplished
and spirited, it hardly pierces the arrow of the heart in the fevered,
imaginative way that axemen Link Wray and Lonnie Mack could on many of
their instrumental discs from the same time. That's not to say that
everything here is as instantly dispensable as those budget Crown LPs were
no doubt thought of by the label itself. Cole sometimes manages a tough,
burning bluesy tone, "The Green Monster" being an outstanding example,
though that track (as well as some others) is kicked along by some gimmicky
burning-rubber hot rod sound effects. And, as the title promises, there's
twang aplenty, though a leaner, suaver, and bluesier sort than Duane
Eddy's. He also gets into some relatively early fuzz workouts on numbers
like the Stingers'"Mustang," which has something of a Davie Allan feel.
You hunger, however, for a little more along the lines of the Bo
Diddley-styled "Mojo," where it seems like he's stretching for something
more adventurous, particularly when he dives into unexpectedly lowdown
distorted fuzz. Much of the rest of this comp is coasting in the
songwriting department (which was usually Cole's department), as formidable
a testament as the disc is to his versatile skills.

During the mid-'60s, Ronnie Bird was the only French artist to successfully
emulate the sounds of the British Invasion across the channel. Bird was one
of the few French singers with a facility for singing rock & roll in French
without sounding strained or embarrassing. His first few discs were crafted
with the help of expatriate guitarist Mickey Baker, the same Mickey Baker
who was half of Mickey & Sylvia and responsible for great session work on
numerous rock and R&B songs in the '50s. Baker played on Bird's discs and
actually wrote a few tracks with him, although most of Bird's records were
French covers of songs by British giants like the Stones, the Who, the
Pretty Things, and the Hollies. For a time, Bird's band included guitarist
Mick Jones, who went on to fame with Foreigner in the'70s.
Although extremely derivative of the tougher side of the British Invasion,
Bird's covers and originals were respectably hard-driving and
well-executed. Dabbling in soul and psychedelia at times as the '60s
progressed, Bird eased out of the music business and emigrated to New York
in the '70s
Ronnie Bird - 1965 (1987)
1965 is a compilation of Bird's first four EPs, released on French Decca in
1964 and 1965. Divided about evenly between covers and originals (three
co-written with Mickey Baker), these 16 songs represent his best and
hardest-rocking output.

Dentre as diversas bandas nacionais de Rock Progressivo já divulgadas por
aqui, todas pertencem exclusivamente ao núcleo da região sudeste do Brasil,
incluindo os estados de Minas Gerais e principalmente Rio de Janeiro e São
Paulo. Bandas essas de diferentes vertentes ligadas ao gênero e que, de
certa forma, possuem uma maior notoriedade entre os mais assíduos ao
progressivo.

Hoje, tento quebrar um pouco esse paradigma, bastante monopolizado por
esses estados e trago aqui uma interessante banda oriunda da região norte
do Brasil que, muito surpreendeu e chamou a atenção com a divulgação de seu
primeiro EP nas redes sociais em 2015.

Prognoise vem do estado de Rondônia, mais precisamente da capital Porto
Velho e foi criada em 2012 pelo guitarrista Zeno Germano e o baixista
Alessandro Amorim com a proposta de criar um som mais voltado para o
progressivo, estilo esse pouco explorado nas regiões Norte/Nordeste.
(Citando mais alguns nomes atuais, destaco as bandas Canyon de São Luís/MA,
UltraNova de Belém/PA e a já conhecida Anjo Gabriel de Recife/PE, onde
também merecem um maior destaque em futuras publicações neste espaço).

Suas principais influências vêm de bandas clássicas como Crimson, Yes,
Eloy, Jethro Tull e outras, passando também por nomes de grande notoriedade
no Brasil como Som Nosso, Mutantes e O Terço.
Em seus primórdios, a Prognoise era composta por uma série de músicos
incluindo dois bateristas, um violinista e um flautista. No decorrer dos
anos, a banda passou por mudanças de formação e acabou se readaptando para
que fosse possível se apresentar em locais menores e de fácil logística
para a locomoção de seus instrumentos. Fato este, que não mudou em
absolutamente nada a maestria destilada pelo quinteto formado nos dias
atuais.

Liderada pelos membros fundadores, Zeno e Alessandro, a banda ainda conta
com um trio de jovens e talentosos músicos que, nitidamente, chegaram para
agregar ainda mais qualidade ao que a banda se propõe em executar. Além
disso, a Prognoise se dispõe da participação do violinista local, Eduardo
Barros durante as apresentações ao vivo.

A formação atual conta com os seguintes músicos:

- Anderson Benvindo – Teclado
- Ícaro Dickow – Bateria
- Victor Salles – Guitarra e violão
- Zeno Germano – Voz, guitarra e violão


Seu primeiro EP lançado em 2015 e intitulado por Esquizóide, conta com seis
faixas relativamente curtas e de intensa instrumentação onde intricados
solos de guitarra e fragmentos de teclados se destacam no decorrer da
audição.
Minhas favoritas deste registro são 'Esquizóide' que abre o EP com uma bela
simulação de imponentes sintetizadores e 'No Raiar do Dia', onde o tema
progressivo se destaca em seus nove minutos de execução. Belas passagens de
flauta são intercaladas a solos de guitarra e ao agradável vocal de Zeno.

Já o seu trabalho mais atual, Solar, lançado nesse ano conta com a formação
citada acima além de competentes músicos convidados com intuito de
preencher as variadas nuances instrumentais contidas neste álbum.
Nota-se que esse trabalho possui uma maior maturidade em termos de
arranjos, criando diversificadas atmosferas em seu decorrer. Mais uma vez,
fortes solos de guitarra se destacam na maioria de suas faixas acompanhados
pela expressiva cozinha baixo/bateria que formam a base para esse belo
registro.

Na minha opinião, a mais bela e longa faixa de Solar é a ´Hanging in the
Garden', única com vocais em inglês onde o destaque maior nos primeiros
minutos vem acompanhado por um tenro violino. Na sequência, as variações
dos timbres de teclados se mesclam a agora, mais cadenciados solos de
guitarra. Belíssima faixa que merece certa atenção!

É difícil pra mim definir a qual vertente do progressivo se encaixa a
Prognoise até porque não sou profissional no assunto. Porém, percebo que a
banda possui diferentes conotações que variam do progressivo sinfônico,
passando por uma ambientação mais voltada para o Neo Prog e com o peso do
Progressive Metal, devido ao uso excessivo de guitarras fortes e um tanto
estridentes em certas passagens. Deixo claro que isso não é um problema,
pelo contrário. Vejo na Prognoise uma extensa diversificação nas mais
variadas ramificações que somente o gênero progressivo pode nos oferecer. É
nítido que seus músicos são bastante virtuosos e extremamente preocupados
em relação a qualidade de suas composições.

Certamente, essa foi uma das mais difíceis publicações de minha autoria por
aqui. Trata-se de uma banda extremamente técnica com nuances de difícil
compreensão que fogem ao meu restrito e, muitas vezes, vago conhecimento
musical. Não sou profissional no que se diz respeito a crítica musical e
muito menos jornalística. Aqui está expressa apenas minha opinião com uma
linguagem um tanto simplória, a fim de expor em palavras simples o meu
ponto de vista sobre um trabalho vindo de uma banda a qual tenho um enorme
apreço.
