Keith Powell - The Keith Powell Story
Posted: 17 Nov 2018 03:40 PM PST
http://allmusic-wingsofdream.blogspot.com/2018/11/keith-powell-keith-powell-story.htmlA blue-eyed soul singer from Birmingham, Keith Powell released almost a
dozen British singles in the mid-'60s without making the charts. Judged
against other British soul (as opposed to rock) vocalists of the time, he
wasn't bad, with a deep voice and expressive delivery, but unlike Chris
Farlowe and John Baldry -- two peers who, at least from the recorded
evidence, were not as talented -- he couldn't find hit material. His first
three singles (in 1963 and 1964) were recorded for Columbia with his
backing group, the Valets, a combo featuring brass and organ, somewhat in
the style of a muted Georgie Fame. After moving to Pye in late 1964, the
Valets would no longer play on his records; producer John Schroeder steered
him toward melodramatic soul ballads with strings, produced in a fashion
that recalled Jerry Butler's mid-'60s material. With Pye, Powell released
eight singles in 1965-1966, three of which were male-female duets with
Billie Davis (who had made the British Top Ten with a cover of the
Exciters'"Tell Him"). The results weren't bad, if a bit lugubrious, but
were not rewarded by commercial success.
Both sides of his eleven 1963-66 singles (including his duets with Billie
Davis), as well as a couple of unreleased tracks. There isn't much
similarity between this stuff and the classic British Invasion sound; it
has much more of a horn-organ-string feel, with production that is trying
to emulate (with pale results) early-'60s American soul and R&B records.
Powell was an okay singer, and his records weren't bad, but he wasn't
exceptional, and there's little that makes you wonder why he didn't get a
hit. "I Should Know Better," athough, is a lost gem of sorts with its
swirling organ, pleading vocal, and memorable tune; "Beyond the Hill," a
haunting number with a Latin-Euro feel (co-written by Powell), is pretty
good too.
THANKS El mas frio for..

Herberich, geschaffen fьr samstдgliche Ruhe und Erholung.Ein anderes
Probenlokal musste gesucht werden. Rene Schmid¬lins Grossvater, Karl
in hohen Ehren gehalten.
werden musste, hiess in ihrem «Book of the ATTACKS»: Eine erschьtternde
Nachricht!
Folgerung: THE ATTACKS wollen fortan den
anspruchsvollen Spuren (lies Noten) der Shadows folgen. «Swiss
begabter Sдnger plцtzlich von «Unfдhigkeit,> spricht.
Wasserstelzenschulhaus. (Die ATTACKS fegten, die Riehener tanzten.) Und am
20. August desselben Jahres feierten die ATTACKS «in eigener Sache» happy
birthday to THE ATTACKS!
Fьr auswдrtige Basler: Das frьhere
Engagements erwehren ... ... bis der «Eiserne» fiel und die ATTACKS
auseinandergehen mussten, da die Vorbereitungen fьr die bevorstehende Matur
die jungen Leute in Anspruch nahmen.M. L.
THE ATTACKS danken Herrn und Frau K. und M. Steinhilber, den
«Attackseltern», herzlich fьr ihre unentbehrlichen Hilfe¬leistungen beim
zeigten. Basel im Juni 1967 THE ATTACKS

VA - If You're Ready! The Best of Dunwich Records, Vol. 2
Posted: 17 Nov 2018 01:55 PM PST
http://allmusic-wingsofdream.blogspot.com/2018/11/va-if-youre-ready-best-of-dunwich.htmlThis second volume investigating the history of Chicago's best -- and most
influential -- teen band label of the mid-'60s comes up with 28 tracks of
classic Windy City garage band genius with more emphasis on rarities and
unissued material than its initial volume, Oh Yeah! Dunwich was a small
concern, run by three jazz heads, who nonetheless managed to tap into
Chicago's fertile teen scene of the mid-'60s and get the very best groups
down on tape at the city's best studio, Universal. Although "Gloria" by the
Shadows of Knight was their only major national hit, they were one of the
few labels that steadily catered to this kind of teenage racket; the
quality of their releases was very high and many of them have reached
legendary status. The Pride and Joy (actually the Del-Vetts) kick things
off with the title track and rare Dunwich 45s from the Shadows of Knight
("I'm Gonna Make You Mine," which starts out with a four-chord guitar blast
dripping with reverb, distortion, and rock & roll), Things to Come, the
Luv'd Ones, Saturday's Children ("You Don't Know Better"), the Rovin' Kind
(great covers of "Girl" and John Sebastian's "Didn't Want to Have to Do
It"), and the Wanderin' Kind all keeping the disc stuck in high gear. Seven
of the tracks here are previously unissued masters, and these, along with
radio spots by H.P. Lovecraft and the American Breed -- one of them for Ban
deodorant! -- and a rare alternate session take of the Shadows of Knight
creaming "I Got My Mojo Working" (originally released on a vinyl album of
Dunwich outtakes in the '70s called Early Chicago) make this fine
collection a worthwhile addition to anyone's '60s garage band collection.
This one literally screams of teen clubs, Rickenbacker guitars, and fake
IDs.

http://allmusic-wingsofdream.blogspot.com/2018/11/va-oh-yeahbest-of-dunwich-records-vol-1.htmlThe Chicago-based Dunwich Records was the leading Midwestern garage-rock
label, turning out countless great singles from the likes of Shadows of
Knight, American Breed, the Rovin' Kind, and H.P. Lovecraft. Oh Yeah! The
Best of Dunwich Records is an excellent 31-track collection that contains
the label's best-known hits, plus several fine unreleased cuts, radio
commercials, and interviews. Anyone interested in delving into garage rock
any deeper than the Nuggets compilations should start here -- it gives a
good idea of both the treasures and the mediocrities to be found in the
multitudes of compilations, and few other collections are quite as
consistently listenable as this one.

Jerry Williams - Action (1966)
Posted: 17 Nov 2018 07:50 AM PST
http://allmusic-wingsofdream.blogspot.com/2018/11/jerry-williams-action-1966.htmlSven Erik Fernstrom (15 April 1942 – 25 March 2018), better known by the
stage name Jerry Williams, was a Swedish singer and actor. He began his
career as the lead singer of The Violents, before launching a solo career.
In 1962, Williams joined The Violents, a Swedish band that was formed in
1959 and primarily influenced by the English guitar group The Shadows. The
band had a number of line-up changes. But when Williams joined in 1962, he
became the frontman and the lead singer of the band. The single "Darling
Nelly Grey" in 1962 was credited to Williams and the Violents and became a
major hit. When Little Richard performed at the Star-Club in Hamburg in
1962, both Williams along with The Violents and The Beatles were opening
acts. When The Beatles toured Sweden in 1963, Williams and The Violents
were the opening act. The Violents folded in 1966. In the 1960s, Williams
recorded a track with record producer Joe Meek. The track was called "The
Wonder Of Your Love". It was never released and was found amongst Meek's
tapes when he died. It can be heard on YouTube. Williams' music style was
soul-influenced by the end of the 1960s, which led to the song "Keep On"
which became a hit in Sweden in 1969. He returned to the rock and
roll-based music in the early 1970s and performed with the band Roadwork
until the early 1980s. Also during the 1970s he toured with the band The
Telstars.

The Violents - AT The Star Club Hamburg
Posted: 17 Nov 2018 07:46 AM PST
http://allmusic-wingsofdream.blogspot.com/2018/11/the-violents-at-star-club-hamburg.htmlViolents was a mainly instrumental guitar pop group formed in Stockholm,
1959. Their first record was an instrumental version of a traditional
song, "Alpens Ros", that gave them a hit in 1961 on the Swedish charts. The
first recorded songs were recommendations by their record company but they
soon started to write their own songs more in line with their own musical
taste. Violents started after a while to search for a lead singer to get
more variations on their concerts, which could last for hours. They found
in 1961 a talented young rock singer named Jerry Williams with a good
reputation as a live act and who agreed to be member of the group. In that
way started a cooperation who lasted to the split year of the group
Violents, 1966. The first recording with Jerry Williams was "Liebestwist"
in 1962. In the start, Violents were the main attraction but soon the
spotlight was mainly on Jerry and the band became a backing group with a
record career separate from Jerry's own solo career. The last lp album with
Violents behind Jerry Williams was Action (1966). Among the group's
highlights in their international career was to play at the Star Club in
Hamburg 1962 with The Beatles and Little Richard. The Beatles were just
second band to Violents at that time and it is rumoured that George
Harrison was test playing for a membership in Violents because he was tired
of The Beatles, but that the Violents didn't want him.***

The String-A-Longs - Wheels
Posted: 17 Nov 2018 07:36 AM PST
http://allmusic-wingsofdream.blogspot.com/2018/11/the-string-longs-wheels.htmlAmerican instrumental band comprised of Keith McCormack, Aubrey Lee
DeCordova, Richard Stephens, Jimmy Torres, and Don Allen. All members
played guitar except for Allen who played the drums.
****
The String-A-Longs were an American instrumental group from Plainview,
Texas, United States, known for their hit single, "Wheels", produced by
Norman Petty on Warwick Records. The band consisted of Richard Stephens and
Jimmy Torres alternating lead guitars, Keith McCormack on rhythm guitar,
Aubrey de Cordova, bass guitar and Don Allen, drums. They began recording in
Amarillo, Texas, as the Rock'n Rollers, under their first manager Johnny
Voss, Keith McCormack's Uncle. Their first single was on the Ven label. In
the later fifties they began recording in Clovis, New Mexico, under Norman
Petty as "The Leen Teens" but Petty suggested the name "String-A-Longs".
They had several releases before recording their big hit "Wheels"."Wheels"
was released in December 1960 and hit in 1961. The tune peaked at number 3
on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the number 8 single of 1961 according to
Billboard.[2] The track reached number 8 in the UK Singles Chart.\ It sold
over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
Warwick Records paid few royalties to the band and they declared bankruptcy
as they were being sued to avoid paying more.[citation needed] The writers
of the song did receive their royalties, including Norman Petty.
There were 100+ cover versions, including by Joe Loss ("Wheels Cha-Cha")
and Billy Vaughn.
The String-A-Longs followed up "Wheels" with "Brass Buttons" (U.S.
#35), "Should I", and "Replica". In 1961, they moved to Dot Records; and
had disbanded by 1964. Petty still had the "String-A-Longs" name
copyrighted, and to avoid confusion with the instrumental Fireballs music
and the current vocal hit "Bottle Of Wine" they were having, opted to reuse
the name for the LP Wide World Hits on Atco in 1968. It is the Fireballs
performing the music under the String-A-Longs moniker.
The original lineup reunited for the Clovis Music Festival in 2006.

On a clear night in spring 1965 a group of beatfreaks were crawling up the
last hill to the "Rheinbundhaus". The musical core of this bunch were
Marmo, Luus and Hamster. We were dedicated followers of The Shadows, and it
didn't take long to get together with another friend and start rehearsing.
We had a ukulele, two acoustic guitars and a bar sieve for a drum. Enough
to produce some rattling noise that couldn't be ignored. After even our
parents had given up trying to stop us, we formed a real band and never
looked back. In December we were ready at last, and tried to get some gigs.
After initial failures the owner of Restaurant "Glock" gave us a chance. The
following change of drummer couldn't discourage us, because actually this
was the real start of THE CHAPS with Paul Stoob on drums.Bookings at
the "Casita" followed in February 1966. Our best boy Sammy Frank had a lot
to do and we were working every Saturday night now. A performance at
the "Kitsches-Kitsch Can"-event at the "Kunsthalle" (or was it "Kitsch As
Kitsch Can"?) was followed by the first steps across our Canton's border.
Zofingen was the place where we tried to bring the house down and survived
an Egyptian plague of cockchafers. But hard times were around the corner,
and we had our share of ups and downs again, when our manager started to do
his bits on the side. His replacement was Urs Gnehm, who soon became a
close friend. He perfectly fit in with the band, and with permanent
dedication he mananged to get us fantastic engagements. Especially a two
week residency at the "Atlantis-Scherz" brought us big success. (And some
unexpected surprises which we rather keep to ourselves.) At last we had
achieved our common purpose and owned a proper beatband equipment without
being indebted. Trying to prove that beat musicians not always play for
their own profits alone, we organized an open-air concert for the charity
action "Bread for Brothers", which was a great success. The hardness test
for the band came in 1967. It all started fine with another highlight at
the music hall of the city casino, where we were the first beatband booked
for a "Fromm-Ball". Prominently featured in a wellknown Basle newspaper we
could read what a kind journalist had to say about us. But the crisis came
nevertheless. Paul the drummer left in mutual agreement, and we had to look
for a fitting substitute. After a long hiatus, The Chaps were in full-blown
line-up again by the end of summer 1967. Rico Candio on drums and organist
Alain Veltin changed our style copletely, and new engagements soon were
offered. It was a pleasure to play the "Atlantis" again, and the "IG-Fest"
in the "Freie Strasse" will always stay in good memory. We're still keep
talking about it these days.At the "Technikums-Ball" in Lucerne, where we
appeared as a proper ballroom orchestra, we showed that even a beatband is
able to provide decent standard dancing music. Time is flying and with the
new year in sight we have found yet another drummer. Mike Herbrich is
number 11 since we started. Sadly we'll have to give up the band by the end
of January 1968, as military service and final examinations inevitably come
closer.Even if our new record may lack some production and and a bit of
polish, it's meant as a keepsake, and we dedicate it to all friends and
followers who had fun listening to us.Riehen, December 6th 1967. THE CHAPS

1943Born in Bobingen, Bavarian Swabia, Germany, Black attended the
gymnasium in Augsburg and, aged 20, founded the rock and roll band Roy
Black and His Cannons. His stage name derived from his black hair and his
idol, Roy Orbison.
Roy Black and His Cannons achieved some local fame and were offered a
recording contract with Polydor Records. However, his record producer Hans
Bertram decided on a solo career for Black, and a switch to romantic songs
for his protégé, a decision which soon led to nationwide fame. In 1966, his
single "Ganz in Weiß"—a romantic song about marrying in white—sold in
excess of one million copies by the end of 1967.His 1969 song "Dein
schönstes Geschenk", sold one million copies by May 1970, having spent nine
weeks at number one in the German chart.
From 1967, Black also took on roles in several musical comedy films, for
example in the 1969 movie Help, I Love Twins opposite Uschi Glas.
In 1974, Black announced his engagement to model Silke Vagts (1945–2002),
and the couple got married in Munich the same year. In 1976 their son
Torsten was born. They divorced in 1985.
Six years later, Black died of heart failure, in Heldenstein near Mühldorf
am Inn.
In 1996 the Television film Du bist nicht allein – Die Roy Black Story was
produced, starring Christoph Waltz as Roy Black.
There is a small monument to his name in Velden am Wörthersee, Austria...
