Morgen - Morgen - (1969 us psychedelic hard rock - wave)

Posted: 06 Aug 2013 02:13 PM PDT
http://silveradoraremusic.blogspot.com/2013/08/morgen-morgen-1969-us-psychedelic-hard.html

From New York, this short lived band evolved around the namesake guitarist
Steve Morgen.
A foreboding bass riff and staccato drumming introduce ‘Welcome To The
Void’, and for the next thirty-eight minutes one is hurled headlong into a
vortex of dual-guitar overload, lyrically woven with romantic and Victorian
imagery residing on a tab of microdot.
There are some cool passages here, like the sudden rush of Jimi Hendrix/the
Who-hybrid notes in “Love” as a jungle beat throbs in the background, and
the lasciviously fey vocal and sweetly fuzzy guitar sustains in “Of
Dreams.” “Eternity in Between” does make it clear Morgen was a big Who fan,
with its lifts of the chord sequence from “Underture” and the stuttering
distortion of “My Generation”.

Formed in Memphis in 1968 by Baker, who'd fronted local faves The Blazers,
the initial line-up evolved to include drummer Durham, who'd been with The
Group and The Rapscallions. Produced, written and arranged by Don Nix
(ex-Mar-Keys and Paris Pilot) in Memphis, Moloch is an excellent blues rock
album with some sound effects, noises and superb acid guitar solos by Lee
Baker. Their single was recorded after the album with a later line-up and
is extremely rare.
The genius of Lee Baker
Lee Baker is the greatest guitarist you have never heard of. Here is your
chance. Listen to Baker alternate between fuzzy, funk blues riffing, slippery
slide and stinging leads. Beale Street summer of love. Moloch is a
collection of notorious Memphis musicians. Blues filtered through blotter
acid. The original version of "Going Down" is here. Yes, the very same song
Jeff Beck/Freddie King etc covered. Before you smugly ask, yes,Baker is the
equal to Beck. He's that good. Ask Jim Dickinson. Ask Alex Chilton. Smell
the psycho daisies and grab this disc. (By McCarthy Salisbury)

Hackensack - Up the Hardway, title track from their debut (and only
official album for Polydor) album, released in 1974. Hackensack existed
between 1968 and 1974 and released the abovementioned album and one single.
They were formed by vocalist Nicky Moore, one of England's best frontmen.
Their stage act was reminiscent of The Who and they built up a good
reputation as a hard working and hard rocking blues/rock quartet. Their
only album release is quite collectible today, and had a good mix of solid
rockers as well as the odd tasteful blues track. Unfortunately its failure
to do much led to the demise of the band in 1974. Moore subsequently joined
Tiger, Samson and Mammoth, with drummer Simon Fox moving on to Be Bop
Deluxe and guitarist Ray Smith (a.k.a. Ray Major ) moving on to The British
Lions, an offshoot of Mott the Hoople.(From Chris Goes Rock)

It's a nice disc. Kind of a looser version of Chicago. Less pretty vocals,
but nice and lots of rock guitar licks and horns for a jazz/rock/blues
fusion feel. This release is Keef Hartleys most Rock and Roll sounding as
compared to the bluesey previous material. I feel that every song,
including the bonus tracks is a keeper. Is it comparable to Magical Mystery
Tour, No but its a fine peice of 1970 music that I'm pleased to own. Of all
the Hartleys I own I must say this is overall the best.(Mark E. Hyken)
